I'm trying to reduce the phosphates in my aquarium (to reduce the amount of algae) and read that protein skimmers are great for that. But I don't have a sump. Can I have a protein skimmer without a sump?

There are hang-on back skimmers. Due to their smaller size they're not as effective as the in sump ones so if you have a large tank they may not be worth the trouble.

No, I don't think you can run one without a sump. You might be able to purchase one that hangs on the back and has it's own "sump" built-in maybe?

What kind of chemical filter are you using? I use and suggest Chemi-Pure elite it's an all in one chemical filter. It contains ferric oxide to help remove phosphates and silicates. Or you can throw some phosguard in it, too.

I don't use RO/DI water so I take a few extra steps, my saltwater is in a brute 44g in the garage heated to 75 degrees with the stock Fluval 13.5g return pump in it. I added some tap water conditioner also have some Chemi-Pure and Phosguard in there next to the pump. I've been testing for phosphates and there is none detectable in my tank or the premix and I know for a fact we have them in our tap water, because I tested that too.

I think I'd do something like the tunze macro algea reactor if I could solve the plumbing. Or a hang on scrubber if they exist over a small skimmer

On my nano I didn't find a small skimmer did much of anything and just removed it ultimately. Water changes were my nutrient export.

I have a 55 gallon mixed reef tank that I have had running successfully for 8 years now. I had a HOB Reef Octopus 1000 skimmer that I ran for 7 years and was still going, but I decided to try the 2000 HOB this last winter. I like it to, but honestly I liked the 1000 better. When I unplugged it, I could just plug it back in and it was ready to go. With the 2000 I have to prime it 90 percent of the time, and its a pain. It is a good skimmer to though.
So Yes, you can successfully run a HOB skimmer on your tank as long as your tank is not to big for the skimmer.

Build a DT macro garden, that's what I did. Everything seems to enjoy it and the macroalgae will out-compete the nuisance algae for nutrients. It's easy to maintain the garden on a nano tank, bigger tanks would seem more of a headache.

this one goes in the tank. i purchased this for a gallon breeder i am going to set up.

How big is your tank? A HOB skimmer works very good if properly set up. Reef Octopus has a couple of different HOB skimmers that will work well in larger tanks. Another good choice is the Aquamax HOB 1.5. That will fit in the back of a Nuvo Fusion 20

I'm using a canister filter, and I put Phosguard and Denitrate in it. I use RO/DI water, but I can't get my phosphates lower than 0.1. They range from 0.1 - 0.7.

It's 60 gallons.

I used a Reef Octupus Classic 2000 HOB on my red sea 260 max which is about 55 gallons. The rs 260 came with a skimmer but the HOB out performed the RS skimmer by a long shot.
