Protein skimmer

that's good, I forgot to ask if you have a sump running , a protein skimmer rated for the volume or higher is great but you really should have some kind of mechanical filtration such as a filter sock or at least floss, something to remove the organic waste before it can break down into nitrates.

No sump my tank is freshwater I'm converting. I will b using hang on back skimmer and live rock hope this is enough

you might find a member called KJ, he lists a website about the supreme guide to saltwater reef keeping which I found invaluable to the hobby. just look under members and you can get the site info. depending on what kinds of marine life you are planning to raise, you will get great info on the subject. hope this helps, and welcome to the saltwater hobby!

well you are very welcome and im glad to refer you to someone that can be more helpful that I. that's the purpose of the forum, if you don't have the answers, someone here does:D. ENJOY!

Protein Skimmer Removes Excess Nutrients from your tank, so there you go you have 1 thing under control, some other things you should consider -
- Organics
- Phosphates
- Nitrates
- Detritus

I converted my 120 gal. discus tank to reef almost two years ago. softies and a few lps. no sump and a hob skimmer. no other filtration except for 150 lbs. of live rock. I do use a small canister once in a while to run carbon.
