I bought a 90G tank 2nd hand, brand new, came with new parts pumps, sump, etc - came with a Coralife Super Skimmer 125G new (old model) , I think I'm going to sell it and get a new up to date model anyone have any suggestions on a good skimmer ? Also a good pump for my sump system

If the super skimmer works, you may as well keep it for now – if other skimmers are better, it's only marginally...mostly they are just more popular – and prioritize the other things you need. (The skimmer can always be replaced later if it really has problems.)

If/when you do replace it, I'd check out Tunze and AquaC for replacements.

Tunze's DOC Skimmer 9410 ($330) would be my preference on their side. Top-flight needle-wheel skimmer with some of the best features around. Very easy to clean.

AuqaC's EV120 ($300) would be my preference on their side. Old-school skimmer – easy to clean and awesome in that it takes ordinary hobby pumps to run.

I have both of these skimmers and really love both of them.

Awesome super helpful thank you! The skimmers never been used just the sponge of it smells like old cigarettes very badly but it's brand new never used , main reason I was on the edge of just replacing it if I were to go through the hassle of ordering a new sponge I might as well just order a skimmer was what I had in mind.

The sponge is theoretically supposed to stop micro-bubbles from leaving the skimmer.....mostly for if you're using it directly on the display. Shouldn't be an issue in the sump. (And debatable whether they really help anyway. Plus, once the skimmer breaks in, micro-bubbles aren't usually a problem.)

Awesome never knew that ! Also what about my sponge in the sump and pumps? Also heavy odor couldn't get it out..

For the smell, you might try a soak in hydrogen peroxide or bleach (1:10 dilution with water, not full strength) if you haven't already.

Overnight at most should do it....maybe try a few hours first. Then a thorough rinse and then let it sit out and thoroughly dry (if the smell is gone).

Hard to say for sure without seeing where they are/what they're connected to, but in general sponges don't have a really good place in a reef. One more thing to clean, and they tend to kill performance when they are clogged. Plus what they catch should be coral food. ;)
