Hi I have a aqua one protein skimmer G220 I’ve never had a protein skimmer so i am confused. Tried search online but struggling to find a solution.

I turned the skimmer on with both valves set to fully open or fully closed ( which ever gives you the least bubbles)
But the problem I’m having is the bubbles are overflowing and filling the cup with what looks like clean water? Any ideas? Is my water level too high for the skimmer or is the skimmer just bedding in for a few weeks.

In the mean time I’ve opened the drain back into the sump as the cup will fill too quickly if I don’t

If its a brand new skimmer, it will take a few days for it to break in, they all come with a coating on them, and that drives them nuts at the beginning. You can take it back out and give it a vinegar bath to remove most of that coating to help a bit.

You’ll have dial it down for a while. That’s normal for a new skimmer, it may take a week for it to work properly. By dialing it down I mean reduce the air intake, reducing the foam. If it’s still going nuts reduce the flow through if able. Also if you have a cup drain which I think you mentioned, keep that open for a while until things get more dirty looking in the cup, just let it flow back into the sump Or just empty the cup back into the tank. Before long you’ll start to see the cup fill with darker liquid. If none of this works, then it immersed too deeply. Just keep an eye on it. While I’m not familiar with your specific skimmer, there are some that are extremely finicky.

So if I leave it for a few days it should eventually start pulling that “coffee” coloured skim out? Also what if I don’t notice until too late as it’s draining into the sump?

Its ok to let it drain into the sump, won't hurt anything. You can just watch it for awhile, if you want you can keep adjusting it, but that will drive you nuts, set it and let it run, overflowing or not, and let it run its course. It will fix itself, you'll notice it change and thicken up instead of just running thin crazy bubbles.
