Buying a new protein skimmer for our 125 gal with 40gal sump. Have several we are torn between! Any inputs are very welcomed! Here’s the list. Bubble magus curve d8 dc , bubble magus curve 7 elite, rsk300, x-160 eshopps and icecap k1-200. We also are looking for the new max spect jump. The e-sk1000 is more expensive not sure it’s worth being on the list. Any experience with these would be helpful! We are looking for a quite pump! It’s in our living room lol. We plan to run heavy bioload as well.

For what it’s worth, I “always” go with a recirculating skimmer— even if I am going to sit it internally within the sump. You will never have to worry about your sump water level again. (Right now I have the Octopus Classic.)

I’m a reef octopus fan - I have a s130 which is great but you’d want to go up a bit for that tank.

Also recommend Reef Octopus. I run RO Elite 150 on 90 gallon. Quiet and produces lots of skimmate. Runs DC motor which you can control - optimizes the skimming with very low power consumption. Had NYOS 160 AC motor that drew 60 watts. RO 150 draws 19 Watts on 4th highest power setting (total of 5 power settings). Check the skimmer electrical draw on my Apex below.

For the money and bang for buck the reef octopus would be the way. They have skimmers to fit all budgets. I have the essence and for not having a DC pump it is shockingly quiet and performs very well.

We actually have the reef octo classic 200int but the external pump is a pain for the room I have. Also the pipe that puts water back out from skimmer. It’s just a huge skimmer. Looking at the e-sk1000 dc but I don’t get how it puts water back into the sump since it’s pipeless outflow? What does that mean exactly?

I went with reef octopus elite int-200 it seems to be working great, I just couldn’t bring myself to buy a royal exclusive, Plus I heard good things about reef octopus elite series

I like my bubble magus better than my reef octopus. Easier to adjust and seems to pull more crud out of the water. My 2 cents.
