Hey Guys,

I have a question for you fellow reefers, I have a 40 gallon breeder tank. My question is I have a Aquaclear 110 and a wavemaker on the other side of the tank which seems to move the water around pretty well but I was wondering should I add a Skimmer to the tank?

The eshopps HoB skimmers work good. What wavemaker do you have? You would be surprised at how much flow you can use.

It's up to you and how much you dirty up your tank. I personally feel protein skimmers are a waste of money but they could be good for beginners. Like kneepads when riding a bike, not necessary but helpful

Skimmer is never required. Water changes will do the same thing. Only thing that skimmers do is prolong water changes. So no, you don't need one. Hang on the back is probably preferred since one in the tank risks more bubbles in the display.

If you are housing SPS, skimmers can be good. If lps or leathers, you may find more success without if you keep up with routine water changes. They tend to like 'dirty ' water.

Here's a pretty good tank with a setup similar to yours:
