There are many threads popping up. To be clear palytoxin is present in palythoa, zoanthus, a genus of Dinos, and some cyano. It can bioaccumulate in fish so dont eat your fish and it may be spread within a tank and absorbed into other coral (though unlikely; corals and algae immediately adjacent to palythoa in the wild have been found to contain palytoxin)).
Sturdy gloves, goggles and a cover over the mouth are recommended. Palytoxin is also spread into cuts so make don't have open cuts when reaching in the tank.
GAC will remove palytoxin from the water in the instance that zoanthids or palythoa are damaged, releasing palytoxin.

My guess is they were not suffering from palytoxin poisoning just based on the description... unless of course they left something out of the story. Just scrubbing a rock with palys etc isn't enough IME to sicken an entire household, unless of course you boiled the rock 1st.
