Question on the crazy pulsing xenia. I have a nice 3 stock pulsing xenia and it's growing but not pulsing in my 20 long reef. 5 ppm nitrates. I took a little stock that fell off the larger group when I moved it and put it in my 29 fowlr tank. Nitrate at least 40ppm. The little peice I put in the fowlr tank is starting to pulse and looks happy. What the what???!!??!! I wanted to see what would happen and I wanted this to happen but did not expect it too. Does the xenia really like that high of nitrates??? Don't worry I've been doing water changes and the 29 is on its way down from 40 ppm. It was higher. :-/

The pulsing xenia may not pulse if there is too much water flow over it. It should pulse if you reduce the flow or shutoff the power head. BTW, its hard to get rid of once it likes your tank and starts to propagate. I recommend keeping it far away from other corals and rocks.

Ok thanks, should I put it in the sand or up on some rocks?

When I kept my Xenia I selected a nice medium size rock about the size of a baseball and put a small frag of it on that rock and moved the larger rock out into the sand bed four or five inches away from any other rock/coral. This worked well to isolate it from the rest of the tank. Basically if it can touch your glass/rock it's going to spread... and it may even in the sand but that's easy to deal with.

I have a few polyps in my tank, and even though they are looking good, they are not pulsing. I may have too much water flow as well...I never thought of that.

I have had this same issue with xenia, too much flow and bye bye pulsing. you could probably try to redirect your power heads a bit if you can so less flow goes over the xenia.

You guys where right. I moved the xenia to a very low flow area and when I came home tonight from work the main frag I bought was pulsing a little. And the little guy that fell off the main frag was pulsing like crazy. In my opinion these corals like very low flow. About to feed the tank. Thanks!!!!
