I plan on purchasing a Waterbox 180.5 in the near future and the sump will be in the basement. I am looking for recommendations on what pump would be satisfactory for this build. The pump will need to push the water 8 ft. vertical and 12 ft. horizontal with 2 90 degree elbows installed. I would like to achieve between 1200 and 1800 gallons per hour with this pump. Suggestions on pumps please.

Personally for this application with noise not near of an issue I recommend Iwaki pumps! Look at the Japanese models only. They are work horse and will last 10+ years. Just check flow charts and see which will give you the flow with that head. If money is not an obstacle then could go abyzz. Estimate your head being 12 ft. Have you included the height of the tank and stand?

No I did not include the height of the tank and stand, thanks for bringing that to my attention. Total vertical height would be about 13 ft. and not the 8 ft. I originally posted.

I’m in a similar situation, but am looking for a good submersible option. I live in San Francisco and have to hear the tank almost year round so I would actually like the added heat from the pump. I’m looking st about 15-16 feet head.

Ok. Take you 13 ft, then add 1 ft head height for each 10 ft of horizontal run and 1 ft for each 90. So 17 head feet in total i believe

My preference would also be a submersible pump but wasn't sure if any of the internal pumps out there would work, that way I would not have to drill the glass sump.

In general external magnetic drive pumps handle head pressure much better. I think the best submersible pumps are the abyzz. Another external pump to consider would be the new one from MRC. I have never used it, but MRC makes quality gear!

Are you sure? I've always been told that head pressure is measured by vertical distance only. You can have 100' of horizantal pipe, go up 40 feet, back down 30' and you still only have to account for 10' of head.

I'm actually browsing pumps right now to move my sump to the basement, so I just want to be sure. Although, I'm probably going to pull the trigger on a Reeflo Super Dart/Snapper Gold, so I should be good regardless.

Iwaki, Reeflo or Red Dragon
I personally run Reeflo Hammerhead Gold and it is quiet with excellent output

So I can tell you i have an M2 and it wasnt strong enough to handle the move down the basement. It made the head requirements, but not enough flow to run my tank as well as my frag tank and devices off my manifold. And my head height is only 9 ft... so i did buy an L2 (hoping and praying i didnt waste 500$) but I have to make some changes in my sump to install it bc it is 1in wider than the M2 and doesnt fit in my return chamber now. And it has alot larger of an outlet than the m2 do I have to make a few adjustments. But hoping the 1200gph and added head height will make it enough to run everything.

I have run an Iwaki 70 RLT in the past and it worked great! Now running a Reeflo pump an love it as well!
I'm currently deciding between Iwaki and Reeflo as well. Any notable differences? Noise? Power consumption? Which would you pick now that you've run both?

You've gotten suggestions for all my favorite pumps already, so I will just share my favorite head pressure calculator here:

Note! the input for flow is gallons per MINUTE (not per hour).
