When I shut down skimmer for feeding or maintainence it will rarely restart without me plugging hole with my finger the letting go real fast so water starts to flow. Not sure exact model I bought but plan on cleaning out in few days I can check pump model. Anyone else have this issue?

It's not uncommon, and something as small as a grain of sand coud be causing it - you'll just have to check it out. Don't be too surprised if you take it apart and don't see any cause for the stoppage for the same reason. If this turns out to be the case, while you have the pump apart I would at least fill the impeller well with vinegar and soak the impeller in vinegar for a few hours. If you may be getting precipitation from dosing in there (i.e. if you dose), the beginnings of the buildup you'd get are transparent when wet, so it's worth doing a strip down with vinegar like this when you see no other cause IMO.

Seems like lower-power (more efficient) pumps might be a little more susceptible to this than others (like the Mag series, just for example, which are a bit more piggish), so if your tank is not heat-bound and this issue remains a problem after cleaning the pump, you could try a stronger (higher power) pump if that's an option.

What pump or skimmer do you have?

Only thing I can give you is reef octopus 150. I don't know model number or pump model number. I will take out this weekend to clean and get model numbers to post.

usually they are sicce 2500 pumps and ya the calcium buildup will cause this to happen. Just give it a good vinegar soaking

If you have an NWB150 then the pump would be the OTP2000. With this pump it is common that the shaft begins to bind and even fully calcify to the magnet. This would cause low performance, start up issues and eventually pump failure if not maintained. What you want to look for is first check the shaft to make sure it removes from the magnet/impeller assembly and is in one piece. Check the magnet and needles on the impeller for damage, buildup and debris. Soak the pump and all the parts in a mix of vinegar and water. Also include a inspection and soaking of the venturi (air injection point) as well.

That nwb150 does sound familiar. Thank you for the help and will do full cleaning this weekend.

Just for the record this is only issue i have had and to me it is minor issue. The skimmer kicks butt and pulls out tons of gunk.

Just update. Had a busy weekend. Didn't have time to clean tank like I hoped. Maybe this coming weekend. Will post with how skimmer is doing after cleaned.

Finally got around to doing my cleaning. Skimmer seems like brand new. Took me all day to clean. Coralline all over glass. Tank had been neglected for while. All is clean and looks great. Running great and new LEDs thus week.

Funny you brought this topic up. I have a bubble blaster pump and the impeller expanded causing it to not rotate. I emailed CoralVue and they took care of me. My new pump is on its way. Can't beat a 3 year warrantee.

I had the same issue with my BB pump. Unfortunately i bought it used so I didnt know the age or warranty. the impeller shaft magnet had cracked and was starting to rust. it caused it not to restart.

I had an Octopus skimmer with a Sicce 2500 pump. With time it took longer and longer to start up, and after a while it wouldn't start unless I blew into the air intake. I started leaving it running when I took off the cup to clean it. Aside from that it was a great skimmer.
