Pump intake filter for media reactors?

Does anyone use pump intake filters for your media reactor pumps? I would imagine that it would help prolong the life of the media and prevent clogging. I'm imagining something like a screen or filter sock.

Giving this a bump for some help. My reactors are fed off a manifold from the return pump, which does have a simple intake screen.
