Okay, I have two 90 G tanks side by side. Currently each running independently. I want to plumb them together so they are both cycling together out of my 55 G sump. I want to use one external pump to supply both tanks. What I was thinking to do was drill into the sump return section near the bottom and put a bulk head in to supply water to the pump. What size bulk head do you recommend and what GPH pump would you recommend? Kerry

You shouldn't need more than a 1000gph pump split into the two tanks. Most pumps that small will use 1" pipes or smaller so I would get a bulkhead for a 1" pipe. Then just split the water with a T or a Y fitting and put a ball valve on both sides to control the flow.

Just make sure you leave enough room in the sump for the back flow from both tanks. Probably just need a few inches but something to keep in mind when trying to get extra water into the system if you try to overdo the amount in the sump.

Thanks for the reply Chris. I bought a pump from you some time ago that I believe will pump 1100-1200 gph.

Oh yeah, the Odyssea pump. I never ran it external, but it should work ok. It will definitely be enough flow. I only do about 3-4x per hour through the sump, so that will be plenty enough.

Personally, I would use two pumps. I have two tanks with one sump, but use two pumps. It's hard to control the flow rate to both off of one pump.

Mike, do you have one main line splitting into the two pumps or are they independently plumbed to the sump?

I split my return pump to feed my refugium/frag tank and the other side of the split feeds my DT. I just control each side with an independent ball valve and haven't had a problem.

I always heard if using two pumps it way best to have two separate return sections in the sump, but never done it personally. I have seen multiple pumps in a return at a LFS and I don't think they ever had a problem though.

Mike, do you have one main line splitting into the two pumps or are they independently plumbed to the sump?

They are separate. So many things can change, like a pump needs cleaning or your overflow has algae on the grate. If the pump is supplying two different tanks you'll always be adjusting something.

Okay, I went with the one pump with a "T" and ball valves. The odyssea is working well Chris.
