Puncushion urchin grabbing sand

For the past few weeks my pincushion urchin has been grabbing rocks and sand and such (or it's getting stuck to him) and the other day i pulled it off but jow he is carrying a ton of sand. Is this normal?

it is....they tend to collect things, rubble, corals etc. i wouldn't worry....its a type of camouflaging that they do (atleast that's what i read) i had a blue tux snatch up a piece of a zoa colony once...no harm done to it as it opened and closed once the lights when on and off.

i would suggest that if you have some "loose" items in your tank (rocks, corals) make sure they are secure (tie em down or glue em) in my experience with keeping these guys they have had a tendency to accidentally knock things over in search of algae n what not....do you have a photo? you can see my guy in this pic (not a great pic) with his long spines i would things all over the place if i didn't have items "bolted down" so to speak

I have seen these guys pick up snail's and hermit crabs and walk around like a boss. lol

they are great additions to a reef tank in my opinion.....
