I had a bag holding 250 ml of carbon and 250 ml purigen overnight floating on the surface of my water being anchored down with a clamp. When i squeezed the residual water, the bag completely exploded. I have 500 ml total of carbon and purigen that is now everywhere in my tank. The purigen is too fine to be netted out.

1. Is this dangerous in a biological sense.
2. How can I most easily collect what has spilled. Its all over the place and its a complete mess ;Nailbiting

Agree with James M. Also you can use a powerhead to blow off the rocks and then use a net to try and scoop free floating particles out when they are suspended in the water.

Use a turkey baster and like a leaf blower, gather everything towards a corner and siphon it up. What material were you using that exploded ?

It was seachems " the bag", which is quite disappointing considering its price and reputation. Bag was half full of media. My mistake was squeezing the media bag over the tank in to prevent water from dripping onto my floor... :(

Sorry to hear that, I think all of us have done this once or twice over the years!

Don't panic.
Turn off your circulating pumps and have only your return going (at low speed if possible) and allow for everything to settle. then you can use a siphon, put one end in the tank and the other end in your sump going into a filter sock or the purigen bag. start the siphon and try to collect as much of it you can and it will end up in your filter sock. this way you can keep on going without having to worry about running out of water in your display. you don't want to disturb your sand bed much since it can cause a mini cycle if its a deep bed.
