Purigen Type Wet/Dry in Sump?

I have a 2" gap between my baffles in my new sump, and I was thinking about making a wet/dry kind of filter with purigen where the water will just flow past it. It won't be a trickle, but still it will flow through it. I figure purigen is the best since it won't leach, and it doesn't have the threat of metal like marine pure. Anyway have other suggestions? It's a big area so I plan on running 20 or so bags.

Just to be clear:

Purigen is a real nice chemical media, but it will not remove nitrates that are already in your water column.

Just pass that along.

Refugium , but it will prevent them inadvertently by removing organics before they break down.
