Does it work? I have been using gfo to get rid of phosphates to no avail. I've heard that purigen does a better job then gfo and can be regenerated many times. Is this just a gimmicky product or is there a real benefit to it. Thanks.

I swear by it and will always use it. Buy one and never have to buy another. I actually put it inside my filtersock in the premade bag

It works but I will not EVER, EVER try and reuse it again! I researched and found mixed reviews with some really bad horror stories. Called seachem company and asked if bleach and declorinator is all I needed. Told them I had API water conditioner and They said I was good to go. Posted a discussion online about it and was advised not to. It's fairly cheap to just buy a new bag when I need to, But I didn't listen. So now I nearly crashed my tank. Still babying it trying to keep my remaining corals alive. Killed my big brain overnight and my other corals are looking bad. My zoas just started to reopen and Duncan and other lps are closed tight. Sps looks Weaks and all my brittle starfish died. Ill post pics later for ya. Not saying others don't have success Regenerateing, but is it worth chanceing? I will rebuy some and I like chemical pure elite as well.

So how did the purigen kill your coral?

Sounds like after he regenerated it with bleach, the advice he got for neutralizing the bleach didn't get all of it out. I just buy new when I need to replace because I'm to afraid of this happening.

Before recharging tank shot and brain.

I recharge mines with 1/4 bleach 3/4 water. Soak it for a day, then rinse out and soak in double dose dechlorinizer for 24 hours. No problems on my end.

Ya just seems weird that a small amount of bleach like that killed a lot of livestock.I have regenerated mine without using dechlor with no problems

Ya, my gfo does a good job on the po4 level for a couple of days then my po4 will start going up again. The GFO gets super expensive if I have to change it out once every week! I might try the purigne next time.My tank is not a big fan of phosgaurd..

Double ouch, dang.

I never had that issue recharging it.

Sorry for your loss. I have used it for many years salt and fresh never had anything like that happen. Did you use a metal container to soak it in or possibly plastic that was contaminated with soap or such?

Anyone else have problems with purigen leaking white powder into the tank even after rinsing it for a long time beforehand?

Anythings possible, it was a glass bowl from the cabinet. But I feel it was simply a matter of not measure Ingram out chemicals and rinseing them out and decloinateing properly.

Knap_123, it looks like your problem could have been your conditioner. Seachem advises not to use anything containing EDTA. EDTA, which is used in a LOT of dechlorinators reacts with the purigen and prevents it from recharging. I have recharged mine multiple times with Prime, but I have only had trouble once where I didn't double rinse to completely make sure all of the chlorine was neutralized. That did in everything except my hermit crabs.

The problem I have had currently with Purigen is to make sure that you do not dump any of the particulate from powdered pellets into the tank. I threw my bag back into the HOB on my 10 gallon while the filter was still on, so powder coated everything in the tank. Its been a few days and my monti has opened back up, but i'm still waiting on my birdsnest. Doing a water change and dusting off everything this afternoon to see if that helps.

Im sure it was, and the kicker is I found a bottle of prime I forgot I bought awhile back. But all my corals are looking healthy again. The brain and pulseing Xenia Were my only losses.plus a outbreak of gha. But ill just be safe and spend a few dollars For a new bag from now on. And I'm thinking Of adding a DIY mini reactor.
