its actually been there for quite a while with no real growth, is cyano bad?

i just googled what cyano is and ive had that before a long time ago but that isnt what it is... those pictures are really bad if i were to describe it i would say it is like lil soft fuzzy purple hairs sprouting out of lil cracks in the rocks..

sorry for the bad pictures before but thanks to SUBDRIVE i now have a good picture of the algae...
anyone read anything on this before or have some information about it?

i got the same stuff in my tank, the tangs keep it grazed down really well. Corals grow over it, never had it grow over corals which is good thing

It's just rock vegetation, not a bad algae to have really. A lot of live rock sold on the market comes with it. It usually dies off or some fish ends up eating it.

What is turf?

In an old tank, I had this maroon colored fuzz, almost like small cotton balls that really started to overgrow everything. That's what your first picture looks like to me. I had to harvest it manually and I never got rid of it. Nothing would touch it; tangs, crabs, or snails. I had to break down the tank, buy new live rock and start over. Let's hope this isn't your situation.

It looks like red turf algae to me. The only thing that worked well for me were Mexican Turbo snails (I don't have a Tang).
