My Purple Death colony has about 10 percent of the polyps bleaching and turning white, any suggestions as to what it could be causing it?

I'll get some pic's and params tomorrow night.

I did just add some Alk to the tank last night, I'll have to give that one a look. The lights aren't that old at all.

mine did that and i moved them to lower lighting. I lost a few but the colony is on its way back. Zoas are so funny like my hornets go back and forth some days they are gorgeous the next i could care less for them. Try moving them into the shade a little bit. but deffinately check your params. that alk might be the issue

If you don't want them you can send them to me. I had one about a year or two ago that just sat there, didn't grow, was open about 1/2 the time and eventually just disappeared. It was the only zoa I couldn't get to stay "happy"

give them higher light. grow like weeds for me

LOL no I want them, they are really cool Palys for sure. They have actually been my best growing Paly to date.

How much alk did you add? Also what did you raise your alk by? You could of one raised it to much to fast or two, added it all at once and the alk takes a while to mix it could of fell to the bottome of the tank where these where and sat there for a bit and messed with them.

I just upgraded my tank and I did the bad thing and dosed what I used to dose in my old tank without monitoring what I was doing via testing. I added it to the sump, I will be getting some testing done tonight to see if it was even the culprit.

I bleached some of mine when a thermometer malfunctioned and I didn't catch it for a few days. Also have bleached them somewhat in the past when I switched from MH to t5s as a result of too much light.

sorry to hear about your purple deaths buddy. but thought i'd throw a picture of mine in. They are mid point in my 90g tall and as you can see are growing fast!

I assume by upgrading your added more water volume. I think you might of over dosed and here is the logic

You added lets say a extra 50G of water and lets say the ALk wasnt even high compaired to what you normaly run well that most likley brought your alk up, then you dosed on top of it thank good you dosed for the smaller tank or this might of been alot worse.

i don't think alk - simply because purple deaths are almost indestructable and they spread like weeds - a tank wide stresser like alk, would have everything effected and showing symptoms long before the pd's
i would look to a local cause - something irritating it, light, or current
it could be a simple as an aptasia or other coral sweepers, vermitid snail. some sort of worm bothering it

Chris, FYI, below is a list of the various agents that can cause bleaching in corals.

Bacteria
chemicals
cilates
coccideans
darkness
fungi
heavy metals
higher temps
hypersalinty
hyposalinity
doldrum ( lack of water movement )
light
medications
noxious agents
physical stress
red spectral light
sedimentation
starvation
stress
temp changes
ultraviolet radiation

You know what, come to think of it I did move my Vortech over like 4" and now it is right in line with the Paly's. I'm going to go check params now and maybe dial the Vortech back some.

So supprizingly my Alk wasn't as bad as I thought it would be. It is low but not horribly low.

Here are the big 3:

Alk 6.4 Dkh
Cal 480 ppm
Mag 1350 ppm

With those results I am thinking it is a flow problem.

You can put PD's right in front of the MP40W on full blast and they'd just grow faster. I'd look to the very low Alk. It's weird that they bleached, mine just turn brown for weeks at a time. All of the proto-palys grow like weeks for me.. the Capt Americas, Unattainables, PD's and Mind Blowings.

I have a quick update, I haven't done anything other than dial down the flow from the MP20 that is over the colony. They don't seem to be getting any worse though.

Here is a bad pic, but you can see the bleached polyps.

that pic seems to agree with my initial thought - you have an aptasia, worm, vermitid, toxic sponge, crab or something right in the middle of the colony irritating them
i would cut it up and seperate the healthy polyps from the colony, and after splitting them dip them in case its bacterial
