Purple dottyback spitting sand

Earlier this week I started to notice sand all over my rocks and then yesterday I saw my dottyback spitting sand out of his mouth, then he would go back under the same rock in the middle and about 10 seconds later he would come back out spitting the sand in one spot or sometimes all over the tank. Is this normal behavior for a purple dottyback?

Mine does this frequently. I think mines cleaning out her hole in the rocks. There's a high pile of sand outside it lol. While I'm not experienced enough to know for sure I'd imagine its normal behavior.

Yep. I have several fish that do the same. Usually subsides once they get established.

Mine did it all the time. Even saw him spit out a starfish.

Funny I have seen a lot of fish do that but my purple dottyback does not. Guess its about where they choose to live. Mine owns a cave high up in the rocks.

My orchid dottyback is always digging....darn thing spits it all over my acans.
