Purple fish suggestions?

Thank you for your suggestion! Unfortunately, I don’t think my neon dotty back and a purple dottyback would get along very well.
Never considered them dottybacks (even if lumped into that category now) but the Purple Pseudochromis (Pseudochromis porphyreus) is different than a purple/orchid dottyback which has the shape of your neon. I have had several dottybacks (neon/springeri) with the pseudo and no problems but never had the orchid dottyback (Pseudochromis fridmani).

Sounds like you should only get a tang if you are prepared to get rid of the lawnmower. The tang will be much quicker andget most of the nori you try to feed the lawnmower, also causing the tang to grow unnecessarily fast. Bad combo there.
Yikes, I’d hate to see that take place! I have 0 doubts my lawnmower would be at war with the tang too, I see him shoo away my lyretails when they try to eat while he’s eating.

Well guys, I may actually go with the royal gramma.. I’m looking through some old threads and it actually looks like they can be big jerks which is perfect for my tank. (What an odd statement to make lol) If not, ill go with a tilefish. But the gramma will be smaller, meaning a lighter bioload which is important considering the amount of fish already in the tank. It will also be at a cheaper price and more aggressive. I’m most concerned about how the neon will do with the firefish + gramma as he matures, since they have similar body shapes. For now he’s been exploring and is as happy as can be, so I’m not worried about that now.

Great choice. The Gramma is one of my favorites and will always be in my tanks.

blackcap basslet would be cool, idk about it co-existing with the neon dottyback tho. i've never kept the neon, but their aggression is notorious

orangeback fairy wrasse would probably work? is it a 4 foot tank? it's got some cool orange purple blue, mostly purple

Just now seeing this, and that’s a very valid point! I’m very curious as to how they would do in my tank and am actually tempted to experiment..

Yup, 4ft. The fairy wrasse are nice! But they don’t go cheap around here... I considered the blackcap, as they're a very cool looking fish. But just like the neon I’ve heard they’re awfully aggressive and I‘d hate to think they’d constantly be fighting for who’s in charge. I’ve actually only heard of people getting rid of their neons. There’s not too many people sticking up for them and saying they’re model citizens like the debate on damselfish. I’m curious as to if anyone has actually kept theirs and how’d it work?

Recently picked up a purple firefish from my lfs, love the way it looks in my tank.
Can’t speak highly enough about my firefish! He looks extra terrestrial with the purple markings on his forehead and the fin sticking up. I was hesitant when I saw that they spend most of the day hiding but I’m glad I picked him up - he’s stolen my heart. Wonderful addition to any tank!
