i've had a purple haze encrusting monti for about a year now. it finally reached the edge of the rock and rather than encrusting downward it has started to plate out from the rock. has anyone else seen this happen with an encrusting montipora?

I have had it happen with my superman monti. I believe it depends on the light and flow conditions though.

I have seen Purple Haze plate like a cap. Undata is another one that plates as well.

thanks for the info, guess i just didn't expect it to happen. i've been waiting to see if it was a fluke or if it kept growing outward and it still is plating!

That's interesting. I've got the exact same monti and mine has hit a point with nothing to encrust to and is growing downward. I'll have to keep an eye on it to see if that changes. I've got a lot of flow but it is towards the bottom under T5's. Snap a pic when you can - we'd love to see it.

sorry, not the best pics but i think you'll get the idea. its plating at the bottom and left.

Same thing here....my purple haze and undata both are plating like a cap. The rainbow and sunset montis don't. It's quite amazing what the corals will do in different conditions!!
