Purple non sulpher bacteria experience

Hi all, I am new here to r2r ( and forums as well) , but wondering if anyone has tried using purple non sulpher bacteria in their reefs and if so what if any changes were noticed? I am just trying this out to see myself . Been battling cyano for awhile now.

Thanks for the welcome- tank in question is 240ish counting sump. No3=5-10(pink on red sea), phos.028ppm (Hanna)alk8.2(Hanna)sg 1.025,cal390(redsea)[email protected] ambefore lights ramp on. Been a struggle to get rid of red cyano from sand and rocks- large Uv in play(110watts)but don’t seem to help much. Lifereef skimmer also. Tanks been working for 2 years now and this has been problem most of this time. Using 3Kessil ap700 lights.decided to try algae barns pns bacteria to see if it might help.

I would also add that my nitrate had been over 30ppm until I employed sulphur into two reactor tubes and this dropped no3 after a few months to current level. This no3 became high with having 5 tangs in system tank.

Red slime algae are actually algae it is a bacteria that is technically known as cyanobacteria. Excess growth of red slime algae typically is related to lighting and/or nutrients in the water. These are the two ingredients that all algae need to grow. When attempting a remedy, try each solution one at a time. Phosphates and nitrates are the primary nutrient food sources for red and other slime algae. Although your nitrates are 30ppm and Phos are 0.28 does not mean that is the levels...because the slime is consuming those two and that is what is left. Just my thoughts.

Thanks for your reply and I will see how the purple non sulfur bacteria dosing works out if at all as I just implemented this yesterday. Tried chemiclean, lower light levels, bluer light settings and issue was not going away for good . I will post experience after few months.Best Regards Jim

Hi Deep, I have read that these bacteria are used /have been used for long time in waste water apps. . Also that the "Algea Barn" was a vendor for this and also explained its possible use. Best Regards,Jim.

If you want to get rid of cyano use chemiclean. If not, youll be fighting your cleanliness of the tank. Cyano grows over sitting organics and old hair algae in my sump. In my tank its not existing at all. Just grows in my red led sump. Whats your light scheduel color choice for ap700?

Hi , my AP700 is set at deep ocean blue from 9am to 1230pm then up to fourth blue level from 1230-330pm max intensity is currently 35% .normal intensity is max 65%. Been raising it after 5 day low blue only period. Lights ramp back to deep blue from 330- 730pm then only moonlight thru till morning. Raising intensity daily 5% (aprox) . I vacuum off rocks and sand mats at least weekly . My bio load is pretty high I feel ,so your correct that getting tank" cleaner" should really be the goal. Large water changes with vacuuming doesn't seem to help much. This is why I'm trying out bacteria attempt.chemiclean has been used in past and works but not for long. Plan is now to see if bacteria diversity along with regular cleaning /water changes corrects and minimizes this red scum. After this ,if still not corrected I may add additional live rock to system as I have only 100lb in tank, and think I may need another 75-100lb.Best regards,Jim.

Let us know if it helps with your Cyano. Would be great if it did. Are you also adding any carbon ?
I heard on a live stream someone said, that if your nitrates were low and your phospates are high then that can lead to Cyano - not sure if that logic holds any merit.

Just checked the label of the PSB that I have in a bottle. It is Rhodopseudomonas Capsulata.

I use two little fish carbon and Rowa phos gfo in media bags in sump. No reactors for these. I do not dose carbon products (i.e.vodka, vinegar etc.)Best regards and Have Happy and Healthy New Year! ,JIM. ( I will report any results good/bad/ none after couple weeks/month)

It killed all my cyan o bacteria that was getting bad this stuff like a magic potion no more bacteria red or brown hair I think my tank looks even healthier now than it did coral all zoanthids beautiful color sps lps beautiful colors and vary happy I do 2ml daily in my 25 gallon lagoon tank

You add that every day regardless of apparent need?

It's the only thing that works in my tank against dinos. Also don't waste your money, microbelift special blend is a PNS product, been around longer much cheaper and can be bought at the big boxes.

Thanks for the suggestion on the alternative option for the PNS bacteria. I have not used the bacteria in a few years as my reef has been pretty much ok. Lately this has not been the case as my rocks and even mp40/gyres have been getting covered with a thin coat of what I think is red cyano again . Also some very healthy lps that have grown multiple heads and are 4years old now are in decline. I am going to try the pns bacteria again and hopefully reverse the cyano spread . Best regards, Jim.
