Hello all,

I just noticed this little purple polyp type thing on a frag with the mushroom I bought. It opens and closes really fast. It reacts to light and whatever swims by. I know it's a crappy picture, my phone isn't the greatest. In the picture, purple thing is to the 7 o'clock to the mushroom. Right up against it

The photo is not that great, but it sounds like it's a feather duster of some sort. Check Google images for "feather duster reef" and confirm that it looks similar.

They'll retract into their tube when they notice a change in light (like a shadow of a fish swimming overhead). Totally harmless hitchhiker.

Looks to me more like a hydroid below

thank you for all the replies, I think it maybe a filter feeding worm of sort. it just doesn't have feathers. it has all the characteristics of a feather duster. this is the fun part of reefing, discovering critters good and bad.
