Hi everyone,

Hope you’re doing well.
I woke up to my purple tang having both eyes protruding and looking like they’re about to explode. Can anyone help me diagnose and treat this fish? I’m guessing it’s bilateral popeye. Last night he was fine. So whatever is wrong with him is progressing rapidly. I’ve had him for 4 years. Eats well and has never had any previous problems. His stomach has always been very large. He doesn’t have that slender yellow/purple tang look.

I would start with placing him in QT and treating with Maracyn (erythromycin) for 14 days. You can immediately dose pure Epsom salts at 1 Tablespoon per 5 gallons.

My two clowns had similar symptoms and I was also successful in treating them with Kanaplex and Metroplex in my QT. I also used Voogle to boost their immune system. They also had a couple of spots on their sides which looked like bacterial infections - my guess is due to the same infection.

The larger female was completely ok after the first 2 week ‘hospital visit’, but the smaller male redeveloped a couple of spots on his side, so is just now completing his second 2 week QT visit. He looks perfect now so should go back in the DT on Saturday.

Thank you all for responding. I treated him with erythromycin and general cure (metronidazole) in a separate tank. Unfortunately he has not improved at all. His eyes are both huge and the part of his left eye that connects to his body seems to have torn and bled a bit (not bleeding now). The epsom salts also didn’t help with the swelling. I could not find a store that sells kanaplex near me (culver city, los angeles). Does anyone know where I can get some? I also own triple sulfa but have not used it.

Maracyn is the preferred ABX for eye infections. You can get it on Amazon.
