Purple Tang Covered in Dust ?

I have a purple tang just out of QT being in CP for about 6 weeks and put it in a new tank. He did have Velvet before but has been doing well after the CP. Can someone reassure me that its possible for them to be covered in dust ( From the new rock ) or is the velvet back. It doesn't look like velvet but just want to make sure. Either way I'm getting some fresh water heated up right now and going to dip him and give it another round of CP just in case.

Definitely not dust. I’d say almost certainly the fish has parasites like ich or velvet. He needs back into quarantine ASAP. I’d say velvet I’m afraid.

You need to get that fish into medicated QT ASAP. Will be beneficial to do a fresh water dip first to remove many of the parasites.

It doesn't look like velvet if you look closer, its not spots it looks more like dead skin or something almost fuzzy.

Did the display tank remain fallow for the six weeks while this one was treated? I does look "dusty" in that pic.

Honestly that is velvet. I had a full wipeout with it and lost 6 tangs during it including a purple tang that looked exactly like that!

In my very humble opinion the only way to be sure if it is cryptocaryon irritans or amyloodinium is by isolating and examining one of the parasites. Also there is no rule that a fish can only have one, your fish could absolutely be infected with both. That does look like velvet to me, but more often than not I do not see a physical manifestation of amylodinium. Usually you can make an educated guess based on the behavior of the fish. Either way the fish needs immediate treatment, as well as all the other fish in the tank. Time is definitely against you, the sooner you start the more likely you are to save everything.

The tank is new. It's just an observation tank. Both have been together in the same QT for over 6 weeks.

If that is a tank you moved them into to observe after Quarentine then something in that tank had velvet in it...OR your treatment for 6 weeks did not work.

Usually you only treat for 30 days in copper and leave the display empty/fallow for 6 weeks.

Perhaps a step was missed and velvet never left

Sub therapudic copper levels could also be a possibility. It would hold off the velvet without effectively killing it.

So true! I was scared of this so kept my cuparmine at .8....and ran 35 days.

OP I would restart your process.

Start 30 days of copper treatment and keep at theraputic levels the whole time even during water changes. Keep the display fish less for at least 6 weeks...yes another 6 unless you are 100% sure you know nothing has gone into your display.

This is the frustrating part and sucks for us all.

DT is going fallow, The purple tang and the clown have been in a separate QT for over 6 weeks in Chloroquine Phosphate. The tank they are in now is brand new, everything in it is new. I followed strict procedures to avoid cross contamination, etc.

The tang did get velvet from un qt'd inverts but visual signs of it went away after a few weeks in QT, it remained in CP for the duration, has been eating well and showed no signs or cues of velvet until now.

I understand it clearly looks like velvet in the pictures and I'm not trying to come across as arguing because I am not, but in real life It doesn't look to have any clear trophonts like normal Amyloodinium and am just a little confused.
