purple tang in sudden shocks..Help

i need ur help, suddenly yesterday night, when i gave food to my fishes, my purple tang moved like electric shock, having jerks and starts releasing debris from her body. she lied down..but her color was same as she has same in normal condition. i kept her in the net of my aquarium....she is still down but some times she stands and then again lie down. what could be the reason? any cure? looking forward ur reply :cry:

How long have you had it? Stray voltage, poisoning, or parasites are all likely causes.

she is with my tank for last 3 weeks and well quarantined. she was eating well ..eating like a hungry lion.... i am very worried...

Does she have anything on her, any spots or anything that looks unusual? How is her respiration does it seem labored also any other unusual behaviors that you may have noticed? Sorry to hear that you are having problems, had something similar happen recently to a Kole Tang that I had gotten, still not sure what it was, hope you have a better outcome than I did.

no ich, no white spots.......color is normal......she is taking breathe.........is your Kole tang fine?

Could be heart attack or stroke. One of my saddest days in this hobby was I moved my 5 year old queen angel to a bigger tank. Let her go and she twitched three times and died.

Unfortunatly my tang did not make it, he had what almost looked like slime coat coming off of him from around his head. Have you added anything to the tank recently any chemicals? When you got the tang did you do any preventive treatments for flukes or anything else? How long did you quarantine her for? What are your water parameters ammonia and nitrite levels? How are all the other fish acting?

I think it is flukes. I had a bi color angelfish with the same symptoms, which is why I said parasites. Do a freswater dip for 10 minutes, match the temp of your tank water for the dip, an put the tang in a 20-30 gallon QT with some prazipro, and a powerhead and heater for a week. That is what I was told to do with the bi color angel, which was much worse off than your tang, so it should make it just fine. From then on I have been doing what I just suggested to every new fish.

Numerous people have used that method, on some very expensive fish.

The idea is to create an environment unfavorable to the parasites, causing them to release their grip on the fish.

Ahh the old fresh water dip. The shock can kill a fish, but if the fish is strong then yes....it will weaken the parasites and possibly kill them.

I'm a complete non-believer in chasing a sick fish in a DT to catch him and trying to quarantine them. The added stress will usually finish the job. I prefer to leave them in and try to get them to eat and hope for the best. If they make it they're that much stronger if not it really sucks but the success rate of catching and quarantining is no better IMO IME.

How many other fish are in the tank and are they showing any signs? I would definitely rule out stray voltage first as others have mentioned.

If you have a good magnifying glass or better yet, a macro lens, take a look at your tang's body and eyes. If the tang has body flukes, you may be able to see them, especially if they are on the eyes.

The symptoms for flukes are similar to ich, but you won't see "salt crystals" on the fishes body. You may see mucous. The fish will flash and scratch on rocks and sand bed and their breathing is usually labored and rapid. Flukes will not go away on their own and without treatment a fish will die. If your tang has them, the rest of your fish will need to be treated as well.

They can easily be treated with Prazipro and it can be administered in a DT if necessary, although a QT environment is easier. I have dosed it in our reef without any issues other than a few corals (birds nests, stylophora) browning out a bit. They colored back up w/in a month after treatment. If I remember correctly, there are a few soft corals that may be affected by the treatment such as Xenia - I'm sure some other folks can chime in. If you decide to treat your DT, make sure you follow the instructions.

Sir, i have a pair of percula clown , one small anemone, blue face angel and one chromis..all are well except Purple tang....sometimes when i give food to my fishes , she suddenly gets up from the net and try to take food. Its being 2 days, she is lied down and breathing........today morning, she suddenly got up and tried to go out from the net..... there is no ich and white spots as well.....body color is normal
