Purple tang question

After 40+ years, I tried all kind of things to feed Nori to a tank with a lot of Tangs. This is how I do it for the last 20 years and will not change. There are all king of ways and all kind of clips from a few dollars to $60+. I think it is the best way to feed Nori to a tank. Certainly, this is no rocket sciences. It won't rust, and it keep Urchin, abalone and snails off of the Nori. These guys are CUC and have to work for a living.

How I feed Nori to my tank.

BulkReefSupply posted these have been discontinued. Many reviews say they are rusting. Anyone have this rusting issue? and how thick is this? 1.25" seems more like package dimensions than the thickness? is it more like 1/2"?
Thickness is like 1/2 overall. Earlier ones I think had issues. Both of mine have been in water a few years now constantly with no issues.

No one says its rocket science, just another valid way to get it done. I got away from that because I hate a loose sheet floating around in a tank, possibly jamming up an overflow, or just in general making a mess of things. Larger tanks with a LOT of herbivores I'm a huge let 'er rip guy when it comes to nori as the sheet wont last long enough IME, I was a toss it in without a clip or anything guy for a long time. As you said the cuc will finish what the fish wont!

Who needs a clip? I quit trying. I Just soak three 1 inch straps in tank water and dump them in. The Purple tang, Tomini tang, Melanurus wrasse and Blue throat trigger devour them rapidly.

When you fold it the way I show in the article, the fishes cannot rip big chunks of it off, so it never floats around. My nori stays on the clips until it gets eaten. The I feed 3 sheets of Nori 10X10 a day. The Nori runs out by 4-5PM or so.

To each his own. Don't assume that I just clip a sheet of it on a clip and be done with it. I did not keep fish for 40+ years without a little experience.

I got a purple tang over the weekend. He is a good size, about 4-5 inches. Amazing healthy fish. Only issue is he LOVES nori so much he keeps ripping the clip off and that keeps falling on my corals!!! Anyone have a suggestion for a heavy duty clip??
Well that’s adorable lol! FOOD! FOOD! FOOD!

I made a mesh bag out of the 1/4 mesh used for tops. Glued a clip to an old mag float. I fold the nori then cut it in strips from the bottom up but not all the way through. Place the nori in the bag with the part not cut under the clip. When the tangs pull at it all they get is a strip that they eat like spaghetti. No nori floating around the tank and one very small piece left under the clip which I drop back into the tank and my naso always gets that last piece.

No one is dissing your experience, you came in the thread dismissive towards how others do it.

I use the IM gourmet grazer and with 26 tangs, never gets pulled off

I tried one of these and close to half the nori is left behind under the plastic that holds it in place. How do you deal with the nori left behind?
My tangs clean it up but you can open the cage and allow it to free float. Tang will get it fairly quickly

To each his own. You dismissed my method without even look at or read about it. Stick to your way and it is fine for you.
Knowing how you feed your tank Nori, and knowing how I do it, I can see that my way is better, cheaper, more convenient.

Reading what you commented why you no longer use my method, I know right away that you don’t even know how I do it, did not even look at the link I provided.

Below is one full sheet of Nori10x10 inch. Folded. The way I folded prevent the Nori to be ripped from the clip so no floating Nori.

My tang go from emaciated to a cardiac waiting to happen

So I read your article (must have missed the post with the link before now!) and Im a little confused on how you attach the clip. Pictures kinda make it look like the clip is free floating with the fish line? Ive found a clip Nix (my purple) cant rip off the glass thankfully but he goes nuts and loves to rip big chunks off and chase them. Weirdo… lol. Kinda over pulling big chunks out of the tank (and getting attacked by my freaking clownfish) every day! PS your powder blue is stunning now. Crazy to see the picture of him all skinny compared to now!

Yeah he makes a game of it now! Pulls big chunks off and chases it around the tank. Not that he has a yellow tang friend they do it together lol

Magnetic clip from two little fishes

I have a suction. I tried the magnet and I keep knocking it off working on the tank lol
Then be more careful lol !! :beaming-face-with-smiling-eyes:
Suction cups are a pain to reload and when I had one they wouldn’t stay attached to the glass for long

I suspended the clip just a bit below the water surface using a fishing line. This way the CUC cannot get to it. Nori only for the fishes. I have three feeding stations to keep the tangs dispersed and keep the PBT from patrol both clips at the same time.
