So we got a purple tang four days ago and we started noticing this strange pattern of swimming around the wavemaker when the lights turn blue (eco smart radion). Watch the video below. It’s always swimming this way on the same side of the tank too (110 gallon). Maybe this is just an adjustment thing or a neurosis but just wanted to check if anybody has experienced something similar. Appreciate any insights!

P.S Just joined the forum and new to reefing (reading threads here along the way have really been helpful so far). Thanks!

Considering it only happens to coincide with lights, may see himself and think it’s another.
As long as he’s not swimming into the wavemaker

Welcome aboard!

May be nothing to worry about. My tang has a pattern that he swims daily for hours at a time. Test that theory by moving the powerhead and see if it continues somewhere else. When changing my scape, mine will move his pattern to another part of the tank and then back to the same spot when everything has settled down.

I think you’re right, suspected that but was thrown off by it only being in one spot (and not the other side of the tank that where he can see his reflection too!) and no, thankfully not swimming into the wavemaker!

Your tank is amazing! Truly aspirational. Still figuring out how to use this forum but here’s a picture of my very beginner tank! (And thanks for the comforting fact! Hope he settles down soon!)

I have a gyre style WaveMaker and my powder brown went through a stretch where he started swimming circles around jt for like 5 or 10 minutes at a time, then one day he just stopped, maybe a little cooped up or somthing haha

But maybe he does not want to defend the other side.
As you know, this tang has personality, and since new, is attempting to communicate what area he thinks is his, or hers.

Enjoy, but always keep a close watch on new tangs for a bit.
