I've used purple up before on my tank for a coraline algae inhibitor, but I stopped until I can get a new test kit for calcium because I believe that it adds calcium to the system. Was wondering if it is used as a buffer at all for calcium? One of the guys at my lfs said he uses it in his tanks as a calcium buffer, but I dont believe that it works that way. Is there any more information about it that you guys have gained from experience? Was thinking about dosing it again on my system. Thanks

It does contain calcium and I used it back in the 90's.
Not a cal buffer, but it adds calcium to your reef.

It's not supposed to be an inhibitor, but it's promoted as an coralline booster.

I'd rather maintain cal / alk and mag with a different manner, like regular two part or three part dosing products.

To me it's kind of a gimmicky product.

It's not like Purple adds coralline algae to a reef.

Either way you have to test you cal / alk and mag.

That's what I figured, i knew it encouraged coraline growth but I didnt think it was a buffer type thing. Both of my lfs are not great at all and its dumb cause they waste so much money killing corals and fish and they should just stay out of carrying what they do. The next best store is over an hour away but I'd make the drive for some quality corals and fish which they absolutely kill it with! Just spent 90 bucks on their frag sale and picked up some really nice acans and monti pieces. But I digress[emoji23]

Thats slang for cruddy or doesn't work. Fancy bottle and packaging without actually producing anything viable.
that would NEVER happen in this industry!! People would never fall for lofty claims and bright packaging.

and oh yeah.. don't put cal in your system without also adding alk. adding cal will drive alk down and vice versa. so yeah, while you are buying 2 part also buy a hannah alk meter and a spare bottle of reagent.

trust me, best $59 you EVER will spend on a tank with corals in it.

I just put in a huge order of test kits, hanna for dkh and two salifert for ca and mg. Also got a NYOS for nitrates. Should I dose on a schedule or create a schedule based on what my parameters are? Here's a picture of my tank anyways just to flaunt :)
