Putting clams in a sump as filters

Would anyone see a problem with adding clams into your fuge(with proper lighting of course) as a filter or anything else benficial?

Feather dusters and macro algae would be far more effective. That kind of setup would suck up more calcium than anything else IMO.

would work just fine, give them a flat disk to set on so they can attach their bysuss threads. As anemonekeeper stated they will use up a lot of your calcium, mg, alk while growing their shells. Up side is nitrate, phosphate reduction. I also posted up a thread about using them as biofilter...

Actually clams would be great. Great filter feeders. You can actually buy "live clams" from your grocery store too!!! They will actually live in your tank and filter feed. I have one in my fuge now. Just make sure it will survive and you are good to go! Place it in a cup of tank water when you get it and watch for it to "spit". If it does it has a good chance to survive. Good luck!

Clams for human consumption, which I'm assuming are the clams you're talking about, are usually harvested from colder climates and won't survive long in our tropical temperature tanks.

Just as a disclaimer, we’re not talking about temperate water clams….littlenecks, pissers, etc. These clams don’t last long in the warm tropical water of our tanks.

Otherwise, nothing wrong with a “tropical†clam in the fuge, as long as you have the light and proper calcium levels. Clams suck up calcium.
