Putting CUC in Rear Chamber?

I have an Innovative Marine 40 gallon and I was curious if anyone has bothered to put snails and/or other members of the CUC in their sump/rear chamber? I think the back area holds a few gallons so there should be a enough room (and lord knows a ton of detritus) for a few members back there. Just trying to think of ways to cut down my phosphates and nitrates.
