Putting sand in bare bottom?

I have a 300XL that the coraline covering the bare bottom is beginning to come off in chunks and it's floating around. I'm siphoning it out piece by piece, and I hate the way it looks. I was considering adding sand over the top of it.

I didn't use starboard, it's just glass. Can I add sand to the bottom? I have enjoyed bare bottom for a long time, but I've never had this problem before. Not sure if it's the glass, or what.

Yes, although you may want to scrape off as much coralline and other algae first.

maybe get an urchin to eat off the coralline first. I think smothering it will kill it ....adding nutrients to your tank.
