Putting shells from the beach into aquarium.

Just for aesthetics or do you want to know if they are beneficial in some way?

It won't hurt or do any damage as long as they are clean. I guess the only benefit is if there are crabs in the tank.

I would sanitize the heck out of them first (ie bleach water, rinse completely, then let dry for 24 hours). Just to make sure that the nasties don't contaminate your tank.

Just as an aesthetics reason, lol. I plan on getting black sand and thought it would look good in it

Algae will grow on everything if there is no grazers around.

Of cause you can use self picked shells if you clean them a little with a brush. Just smell them. No smell of rotten eggs - ok
