Hello - so started my 120 gallon saltwater with refugium back in 2015 and reef2reef was so helpful getting started.

After several year lost wilingness to work so hard at maintaining coral but kept fish only (live rock) with minimal upkeep for several years but stopped restocking. Final clown fish died - several starter fish live 6+ years so had a good run.

Let tank sit dead for >1 year, finally emptied it out and breaking it down.

Is it okay to store empty glass tank in garage in Michigan which has large temperature swings?
Thinking might restart hobby in several years so hesitant to pitch everything

Regardless of location and weather, if you plan to keep it dry for longer period, before next use, it is good idea to take tank apart and silicone it again.

Glass can be stored of course, but silicone..... I simply take tank apart, clean glass, then store it. If ever needed again, not big problem to get some silicone and make it whole again. Not to mention that is easier to store 5 pieces of glass rather than whole tank.

Welcome to R2R! Sorry to see you closing down the tank but it happens. I've restarted several times over the years with long spans between setups. I would store everything that you have that you feel you would reuse as it seems to be common to leave the hobby and then come back sometime later. I've never heard of any problems with storing empty tanks in Michigan or anywhere else for that matter. I'd also clean up and dry the rock for reuse. Very few things are as disheartening as realizing that your spending tons of money to by new pieces of the exact some equipment that you practically gave away a few years before. Hope to see you back in the future!

I'm in southeast MI. I think it'll be okay. I'd wrap it in some moving blankets and duct tape to protect it from accidental breakage. Sorry to see you go, but I understand. Good luck!

Personally no matter where I would live I personally wouldn’t store any tank in the garage as temperature swings do play a part with tank failure imo. If maybe less than a year but I’ve had tanks that I stored in the garage fail before .

Thanks for all the feedback. I didn't think about removing the silicon and just storing the panes/frame in pieces. Disassembled would be so much easier.

Originally I had local shop assemble the refugium/tank when purchased new but I guess it is just the joints holding it together.
