Hello there everyone! So i made a 55 gallon sump out of pvc board, i filled it and it seems to be holding only had it filled for a 7 days and it didn't leak. I just want to know if anyone else have done this before i give it a 100% on my new 300 gallon tank.
its 6' long by 20'' wide and 12'' tall (only going to keep it at 9.5'' max then at 10.5'' i have it drilled to drain so theres no over flow)
The base bored is 2 peaces 4' and 2' 20'' wide i Joint routered them together, then also did the same with the sides on opposite sides of the base( but only 12'' tall)
both ends i didnt router i glued them in as you would any other acrylic tank.
I cemented all the boards together, then even put 2'' wide broads over the seams on all the jointed peaces, plus added silicone over the seams after cement.
do you think i will be okay? i used heave duty cement and also the normal red cement on some spots one side is a 1/6 off so its not 100% flush but i will just shim it up.
Really guy's,Lady's What do you think??
also just took random pics

Works fine. I assume you used a PVC cement?

Only downside, or maybe upside, is you can't see through it.

Yes I used PVC cement, and I can still look down into it so it works for me. But thanks the more feedback the better I will feel

With the weird supply issues with acrylic, I imagine this was probably a good chunk more economical. Plus lighting your refuge section if any won't grow photosynthetic things in other areas of the sump :)

Cost only came to 75 bucks and I have a great 4 foot pink led for my refugium. the light you see in the pics only turns on when I open my stand.

I've been researching this idea for a large sump, how did it work out?

I have had it up and running for a month now and it's working great! I got a lot of GHA in my refugium though but that's my problem haha

Is the pvc board coated in anything to make it mold and mildew resistant? I’ve enjoyed been looking at pvc board from Home Depot for inside my tank stand so not in contact with water.

I've been using pvc board in all my sumps for years now! This is just my first 100% all pvc board sump.
I have never had a problem with leaching any chemicals.

I am starting this same project hopefully this week.

Is there anything you would change on what you did?

I was thinking of adding acrylic windows to the return section, and to the skimmer section so I can see the skimmer and return pump. Have you ever tried that?

What thickness did you use?

I whouldn't change anything with it its a great sump! This sumps only running a water leave at 8'' and its 26'' wide, so i can see right into the sump no problem. tag your build when your done with it please!
What size sump are you making?

Also I didnt have a 4' by 8' board like I wanted to use. So I used Four 2' by 4' boards and some scrap to make this 6' by 27''wide 10'' tall sump. 60G..... 50 G sump. The one thing you must do if your trying to go from 4' to 6' by adding a side or bottom is you need to joint them with a router and clue them together! I also the 2'' scrap helped the biuld by putting them in all the areas where joints or corners meet! I also siliconed the tank just to be safe.
