Hi everyone, so I have my 16 gallon BioCube in my classroom. Everything is great. Our CUC and black clownfish are doing great. We are getting ready to start with coral and I would like to add more fish. My CUC came from reefcleaners.org and they looked healthy so I dropped them directly in the tank after floating (as suggested). The clowns came from a R2R member that was exiting the hobby and were healthy with no sign of illness. They transferred directly into my DT. But now I want to add a firefish and shrimp of some kind. I don't really want to QT as that would require another tank in my classroom and I am very limited on funds at the moment, but I do understand the importance. I don't want to destroy our beautiful tank. I have an extra 50 watt heater, Aquaclear 20 HOB filter, and air pump. I was thinking of getting a 5 gallon tank from Petco and a sponge filter. Would this be adequate? With temps in my room rising to 83-84 with no AC on nights and weekends I would use a fan to create some evaporative cooling. The only thing I would need is an ATO. With not being at school on the weekends, evaporation would be a problem. How does this sound, any suggestions?

While in QT, do I treat for illness and parasites proactively? I really want to avoid spending extra money on chemicals . Can I just watch the fish in QT and look for signs of anything? If I had to treat proactively, what do I buy to get the most bang for my buck?

Now, can I avoid this all together if I buy fish directly from local reefers that might want to sell what I am looking for? Do people do that?

Has anyone quarentined fish for someone else? I know people on here have pretty amazing QT setups. If someone in the Orlando area had a good QT setup and I buy the fish, would people be willing to help our class out? I just want to do things right.

Do shrimp need to be in QT? If I add to my CUC, do snails and hermits need to be in QT going forward?

I know I just asked a lot of questions but I value any input and advice this wonderful community can provide.

Hi, it will probably be better off to get a ten gallon from petco as they are the same price (Actually I think they are a dollar cheaper). Petco has a 60 day return policy for equipment which is more than enough for a qt process.

most people myself included recommend qting every fish you get. However, firefish are generally less prone to carrying things like ich and velvet.

I do not qt inverts. However I know many people on here do qt them as well.

Here you are:

For Ich most people use this method.

But this Method just came out not to long ago that looks very promising...

Most everything else you can find here!
