QT Aersol Transmissions Questions

Hello,

So I know to prevent ich from transmitting aresol the general rule of thumb is to separate Qt ten feet from Display tank and each Qt subsequently ten feet away from one another. However, what if your space just cannot accommodate that much separation. In my case I can separate the coral/invert & fish qt/hospital ten feet away from the display tank, but I cannot separate one another ten feet apart. What can I do?

I guess and Idea I had was to go Fallow in the DT tank and only have Corals and Inverts in the tank for the first 76 days. Then just have the qt tank for fish 10 feet away in the other room. Would this work? I would have to add all corals in at once but that shouldn’t be too much of a problem

My .02, the 10 feet "rule" is just a guide line. I wouldn't worry to much about it. After reading the research paper that fed this whole 10 foot thing, I came away with an understanding that it is highly unlikely for transmission to actually occur. You have to remember that the researches purposely sprayed a liter or 2, I can't remember, of contaminated water using a garden sprayer with a fan behind that spray and they got ONE or 3 tomonts receovered from a tank that sat 10 feet away. So, unless you plan to have a tank sit right behind an AC duct or plan on having a fan blowing over your tank AND have some serious air stone action, I just would not worry about it. Some may disagree, some may chose to be extra safe, either way, I am just stating my opinion.

Aerial transmission is unlikely, but it is possible. If you can't place your QT tanks 10' apart, then you can't place them 10' apart. Just know that aerosol transmission is still possible, even if it is unlikely.

You can test for this. Place dry paper around your QT. Note how far the droplets hit over a period of time and when you do things like feeding ect.... Will give you some idea of how safe you will be.
