My QT tank sits next to a window and with the changing season more light was hitting the tank. This caused a green water bloom in the tank. I covered up the window and did a 30% water change last night.

Will a three day black out get rid of the green water?

Well the black out didn't work. I didn't get the tank 100% blacked out so maybe it would have worked. Currently I'm more concerned with making sure all the fish get fed. So I'll accept the green water for a while longer.

I ordered the green killing machine and I'll try that out in the next week or two. Plus it can't hurt to have a UV on the shelf.

You can use black construction paper from Walmart school section (92 cents ea, , 30" X 24") and tape at area where light is allowed to hit tank. UV rays are very strong and will penetrate shades and blinds

New tanks get all sorts of weird things going on. UV is a good investment.

After 24 Hours with the 9w green killing machine (UV) I can fully see the back glass. Great improvement!
