hey all i want to know who and who Don't quaranteen their invertabrates, snail, crabs, etc as im surprised some do QT them and Some dont. and can the ich cysts live on snail or crab shells for long periods if you dont QT them ??

Years ago I had an outbreak after adding snails.. I now use a UV sterilizer and dont worry about it

I do a 45 day QT on everything wet. A 45 day QT on inverts and coral is good for most things but 76 would be the safest, as you will see in the article KJ posted.

KJ amazing artical mate thanks, and thanks guys for information, ive already got a QT ready. i was just having a discussion with a friend who feels that the LFS he gets his fish from are brilliant and theres no need for quaranteen, but even thou the store is really good im still not taking any chances, i heard about UV sterilizer but i keep wondering how effective these can be. again thanks for replies very helpful :)

Even if you trust your LFS they still have to get the fish from somewhere and unless you know every step of the process before you see the fish in the tank at the store there's really no way to tell what they've been through or where they come from or what the store's procedure is. I trust my LFS a great deal as well and they have a breeding facility so they must be doing some things right but I"m still doing to be doing an absolute minimum of 4 weeks in observation and inverts are getting 76 days or until they molt but I also find the molt tricky because unless you see the full exoskeleton I just feel like how do you know they shed every last bit.
I've really heard that a sterilizer isn't going to do all that much and unless you're running an immune reef like Paul B I wouldn't count on it as any sort of disease prevention protocol.

Paul B uses ozone and diatom filters... basically the same idea. And actually UV are more well documented than the other options. It just has to be sized correctly, which is what most people get wrong. Over powered and really low flow is needed for resonance time.
