Hello all! I’m setting up a QT and I have most of what i need....tank, heater, HOB, hides, all i think i need is maybe a ammonia alert tab. My first question is about cycling. I’m going to put the filter sponges in my sump for a few days before i set it up and then use some water from a water change to put in the QT...maybe half the amount and use fresh salt water for the rest. If i go this method, how long will i need to let the QT set, if at all, before it would be safe to add fish? Will i need an ammonia tab?

Second question, space and outlets permitting, I’m planning on putting it next to my DT to allow the other fish to get used to seeing them..mimicking the idea of an acclimation box. Is this a good idea or will that maybe add more stress to the new fish, meaning should i keep the QT away to allow them time to calm on their own?

Thanks and please let me know if I’m missing anything with my set up. I’m hoping to get it going to add some fish here soon.

Social distance. Dont want the QT tank to sneeze Ich or something into the DT

Heehee. Keep the qt away from the DT. Another room is ideal. Mine are out in the main part of the basement away from the sump room. Tank, heater, hob, airstone and air pump (in case meds drop oxygen), hides (fake plants or pvc), badge, prime, meds.
You do not need a fully cycled tank for qting fish only. unless it is some very specific fish that I will do this for: mandarin, wrasses, sand gobies, finicky eaters.
A Seachem badge or two is required IMO. Especially if you medicate or do not cycle as I do not.
Do not worry about acclimation until time. You can do a box if needed. I made a large one from egg crate, so can be done in a hurry.
Good luck and glad to see you are qting.
