All,

I need help with how to set up a QT tank!

what do I need??? how do you start it?

there wouldnt be any "large" fish in it so would I just need a 10g-20g aquarium? the only fish I plan on getting are smaller wrasses, dwarf angel, longnose hawkfish, starry blenny

Equipment
- 10-20 gallon aquarium?

- piece of live rock?? how much if so? I have 2 baseball size pieces of liverock in my DT that can be used.

- some PVC for hiding? what else is good for hiding?

- Sand? again could easily take some out of the DT

- hang on filter?

-Water from Display tank?

Could I just get a used 29g Biocube from someone?

no live rock or sand. You don't want to put anything in the QT tank that can absorb any meds....
Just use a non-absorbing filter media like sponges or even SeaChem Matrix in a bag. Lots of people use HOB filters like a tidal filter or a simple sponge filter. HOB filters work good because you can add/remove things quickly easily. sponges or matrix for bio filtration, carbon, or copper absorbing medias, ammonia removing media, etc..

20G min if you are doing several fish at once.

Yes to the PVC fittings. Can be added/taken out as needed and cleaned easily.

No water from your display tank if it's infected with anything.

i use a 10g for smaller fish, i have some live rock used only for this qt tank, but it gives the ish some neat caves and natural setting, a hob filter a small heater and a diy lid, this can be done very cheap, i also only use daylight in the room not artificial lighting. oh and since i use live rock, i always seed with fritz zyme 9 to bascially cycle the tank and have neevr had to worry about ammonia

With the price of live rock and sand these days, I don't like to waste any live rock/sand on a QT tank.
Seachem Matrix media in a bag in a HOB works great. seed it with bottled bac if you don't have some pre-seeded already.

Read the QT threads.
