I am seeing guides with different opinions on filters for QT.

I am thinking HOB for water movement, but the sponge might be more efficient?

What do you guys think? I am in the process of gathering things I need for my new QT

The AquaClear HOB comes with a large compartment with a fat sponge and media perfect for QT. And it gives a nice little waterfall effect for aeration. PetSmart sells them. That's what I use and I love it.

^^This, you get the best of both worlds. Bio-Wheel HOBs are fine for QT too and are cheaper than the Aquaclear. But they have a propensity to break i.e. wheel stops turning.

I use a penguin 300 for my QT tank that I run filter sheets and sponges in. I don't think it gives enough flow to a QT so I put in a very small pump to give it some flow.

I use a Marineland Emperor 400 with the bio-wheel. They are cheap and provide enough flow and surface agitation for most QT. Instead of the filter floss insert though, I remove the filter floss from the plastic insert and use blue Scotch Brite pads that are cut to size. Doing this allows for cleaning and repeated use during quarantine treatment and future new replacement pads can be stored in my sump for future QT needs.
