I bought the HOB filter from petco. The sponge is pretty tiny. Can I add a part of a filter sock in the slot where I'm removing the charcoal filter or any other suggestions? Can I just run the filter or do I also need a powerhead? From what I understand if I use my powerhead in a diseased QT then I can't reuse it in my DT. Please advise.

I use these in my HOB in addition to the sponge. Lots of surface area for bacteria.

I run oversized HOB's in my fish QT's so I don't use powerheads. The HOB I use on my 10g is rated for 40g so I get plenty of flow. If in doubt, it is a good idea to put a small powerhead in it.

No problems using your powerhead from the QT in the DT. Just make sure you disinfect it and dry it before moving it over.

In my DT do I need to perform water changes and run a skimmer if I don't have any fish in it?

You may still need to do WCs if ammonia creeps up. A skimmer is not required for a fish QT, but probably still a good idea for a coral/invert QT.

It's not required to run a skimmer in a fishless display either, but I would continue to run the display as normal until/unless you need to make adjustments. If your nutrients start to fall from the lack of fish and fish food, then you might stop the using the skimmer until the fish are returned.

Thanks just exchanged the one I had for the one you are using. Made more sense to me.
