QT tank what is needed?

Im on the look out for a small QT
I guess i just need some small with a heater in tank filter and optional light.
I know that i should have the filter in my main tank for bacteria but can i leave the water with no heater filter etc until i use it as a QT or make 100% fresh mix everytime i want to use it?
