Getting to setup a qt tank finally since my 93 cube is getting closer to startup. My question is what do y'all use for bio filtration in your QT tanks. Maybe just live rock with bare bottom? This tank will likely be one that's going to be setup for quite a while if not a perm setup once all Qt is done. Planning on either a 20L or 29 gallon for this.

Or maybe these? http://www.bulkreefsupply.com/marinepure-ceramic-biomedia-plate-1.html I don't see why not live rock as long as it's not going to be put back into the display, just keep the qt running, as I'm planning. I realize some of the meds will kill stuff in the rocks but that's ok, I think anyway. As long as water changes are kept up and the tank can handle any die off. Jus wanting to hear what everyone else is doing

I have an Aquaclear 70 on mine. I keep sponge chunks in my DT sump so that they're ready when I need the QT. Even if I left it up full time I would still do sponge in a HOB filter. Just very easy to deal with.

Never used rock or sand. You want a bare bottom, pvc for fish to hide and relax in while they are in qt. A good filtration like a HOB filter would suffice. Bare bones is the best approach to a QT.

Really depends what you are quarantining. Its it's corals definitely have some form of filtration. Does half to be live rock but I'd advise that or a housing for bacteria in a reactor. For fish since we do use copper and hypo, I do no rock and just do 20% water changes every other day. The copper hurts the live rock as well.

If you think that you may medicate in the future then I would avoid LR;
1) Copper can bind to calcareous matter, making dosing in the future.
2) Both copper and chloroquine will kill fauna and flora on/in LR - of itself this is not an issue, but the potential ammonia surge in a quite small tank will be hazardous.
3) Other medications may have similar issues as (1) or (2)

Personally, I would only use LR as an emergency measure - since you are very sensibly planning to get it up (And keep it up) and running in advance, you have lots of time for filter maturation, and no need for LR as a panic measure.

(Plus it costs a bit of money).
