Is there a thread on setting up QT tanks? If not, what are the basics? And what is the minimum size requirements for one?

Theres a whole forum section dedicated to the diagnosis and treatment of fish diseases. Humblefish and hotrocks are the QT guide masters that have a couple great writeups in the stickys. Let me know if you cant find the threads and i can try to link you when i have some time.

As far as minimum size requirements that depends on the fish being treated. I successfully QT everything in seperate 10 gallon tanks. Cheap and easy to move and store.

Minimum size depends a lot on the species of fish you are quarantining. I've done 2 smallish wrasses in a 10 gallon for their entire QT in the past but now I use a 20 long for my 14 days they spend in copper and two cycled 29 gallon tanks for subsequent observation and treatment for parasites/worms.

I use HOB filters made for 70 gallon tanks on all my QT tanks filled with ceramic media that come from my DT's sump after 3-4 months in there. I keep my QT's set up all the time but you could keep media in your sump for use anytime you need it. Just remember not to put it back in the sump after using it.

You also need a heater and depending on your HOB filter and tank size, maybe a small power head for flow. I put some PVC fittings (T's and els ) for hiding places and that's about all you need. It can be very simple.

Is it something that I will constantly need to have running or can I bring it out when I need it?

You can do it either way. I am fortunate to have a dedicated room for that kind of thing, but before we moved to this house I had a table in our bedroom that I set up a QT on every time I had fish coming to QT.
