I know that I want to do a sump/fuge and there is room in my stand for it. Since the tank is just starting out am I right with the asumption that the sump/fuge isnt a necessity yet? Display is stocked with a total of 3 fish. Had the thought that I could use the 10 gal under it for a QT till I got the majority of my stock in the DT then convert it to the sump/fuge setup

This idea would work well for acclimating timid fish to a stocked system. But it would not do you want good if the fish got a disease because it would spread to your whole tank for sure.

1++ if you have the sump/fuge ready and set up then go for it it will be less of a hassle if you do it now than waiting long term. i wish i started mine instead of waiting because i have to take the take down to drill or get the overflow box kit which cost more $$$ and time consuming as well that why im planning to have it ready for my next tank build.

Maybe I didnt articulate that so well. Lets try again, lol.

10gal is in the stand, going to be a small sump/fuge but currently dry. With minimal bioload my question was is it in my best intrest to set it as a qt to get my livestock in the dt first. ...THEN make it the sump/fuge?

You wouldn't be able to use meds if you'd still like to use as sump later on.

With any luck I wont be using meds at all, hoping for more of an observation and holding tank. Not a ton left that I want to put in, but there is always the threat of an impulse buy. Then I will need to make another frag tank when I get into corals

I would make it a sump from the start. Drill the tank before it gets wet. Unless you aren't doing a drilled tank. Also a 10g might be kinda small for a sump. Aside from the equipment going in it, my tank back flows at least 5g into the sump when I shut off my return pump. 20g would be better. Cheap enough to get another tank for qt. also once you have your fish set, you won't really need a qt. but it's good to have a backup tank/tub for emergencies.

The tank came with the stand, and since it is a bowfront the stand isnt square....the 10gal barely fit in there so I am not sure that a 20gal wont fit. As for drilling, I did not drill the tank and it had occupants already. I thought about drilling, but I was just happy I was allowed to set it up, I didn't want the fight about drilling a hole in it. I already had the 10gal so I was not out any $

You could probably get away with the 10g. Just can't put as much stuff. It will also add water volume to your system.
