I am new to the hobby (about 5 months) and am setting up a qt tank. I have a couple hundred pounds of live rock that had been "cooking" in a brute can for about 4 months. My question is when setting up my 29 gallon qt tank will using some live rock to keep beneficial bacteria for the nitrogen cycle be ok to do? I realize if I ever have to treat with copper the rock will always contain copper but I am ok with sacrificing some rock to have a more successful quarintine system. I tried to quarantine a spiny box puffer with ich and could not keep ammonia levels down. What are some tips for a new reefer to be successful with quarantine??

I dont use liverock, i dont want to risk the rock holding on to anything. when i know im going to be adding fish i toss some of these filters in the sump and let the tank seed the filters for a few weeks. I toss them after i QT the fish.

I have had more QT failures, than successes, but go read the QT thread, worlds of valuable information.

That said there is no point in using live rock. IMO.

Dependent on what you need to treat you can kill the bacteria and cause even a bigger ammonia spike.
