After two year of dealing with a large outbreak of turf algae I finally decided it was time for a complete overhaul and rebuild of my tank. It is a 110 gallon tank that I have had for almost 6 years now. While this wasn't the ideal solution it was the only one that I knew would completely restart my tank and get rid of the turf algae.
I ended up also buying new lights and rock so I don't have to deal with this problem again. I ended up going with two AiPrime lights and Reel Reef Rock. I have had an AiPrime on my JBJ 28 gallon cube and have really liked the corals it has helped grow and produce.
So I started with taking all the rock out of my tank. After that I was able to catch the fish in the tank and send them off to my favorite LFS, Golden State Corals. After that I dumped 2 gallons of vinegar into the tank and let it run for 5 days. Today I emptied the tank, took off all the algae and corralling that has built up and put all my parts in a 17 gallon tub full of vinegar RO. While all this was happening my wife thought it would be a good idea to repaint the stand and hood. Needless to say it was about an 8 hour project to take apart, clean, paint and put back together.
Tomorrow my LFS is coming over to help me take the harder to remove corraline off the tank and design the rock scape. Then water will be going in later this week to start a 4-5 week cycle.
If anyone has any recommendations on what you would have done differently when you did your build I would love to hear about it so I don't make the same mistake.
