Hi, my quarintine tank is cycled and my hob sponge filter is kinda plugged. How do I clean it without killing bacteria in tank.

I read somewhere that you can just rinse it but I would just rinse it with some RODI water. Tank should be full of bacteria so you won't lose it. I am cycling tank now and thats what i plan on doing.

I clean my sponges when I do a water change.

Fill a bucket with old tankwater. Pull out a sponge, and squeeze it from every direction in the bucket of old tankwater. Replace sponge. Dump bucket. Repeat for second filter.

Do _not_ use RO/DI or any other form of freshwater - the bacteria can go into a sort of osmotic shock, IIRC.

There you go. you learn something everyday. Good to know before I used rodi water. thanks Bruce.

Bacteria can adapt to both freshwater and marine habitats ... but it's best not to ask them to do it instantly, briefly, and then continue working through the next week.

This, also plan on doing this during the quarantine process, when you do water changes. Food and debris will settle in there so give it a good squeeze form time to time.
